Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
